Universal Charitable Deduction

Did you hear about the new Universal Charitable Deduction? Your charitable gift to AAA may now be deducted even if you don’t itemize on your federal tax return!

Summary:

The Universal Charitable Deduction is a new federal tax provision effective January 1, 2026. It is designed to allow taxpayers who do not itemize to receive a tax benefit for charitable giving.

Eligibility:

1) You must claim the standard deduction on your federal tax return.
2) Donations must be cash contributions (checks, credit card payments, ACH transfers, or payroll deductions). Non-cash gifts like clothing, furniture, or property are excluded.
3) Contributions must go to IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities, like AAA.
4) Donations to donor-advised funds (DAFs), private foundations, or supporting organizations are not eligible for this deduction.

Deduction Limits:

1) Individuals can deduct up to $1,000 per year.
2) Married couples filing jointly can deduct up to $2,000 per year.
These deduction limits apply to the total of all qualifying gifts for the year. Contributions exceeding these limits cannot be carried forward.
